We have encountered many Muslims struggling with confidence in their professional lives including myself.

It's a tough reality, and we can overcome it.

But why does this happen so often?

For many, it’s a result of the corporate culture shock. Lets go back and understand why it happens.

As a kid in the '90s, school was a multicultural playground. We were encouraged to be ourselves, By secondary school, it got even more diverse. Out of a whole class, there were only few white English guys.

Even when we went off to university, studying technology (as many Asians do, lol), we were surrounded by people who looked like us, shared our values, and spoke our language. It felt like home.

Then comes first professional job — and the corporate culture shock hits us hard.

we go from being surrounded by diversity to being part of a tiny minority. And trust me, it’s a shock. Suddenly, you’re in an environment that’s nothing like what you’re used to, where being “different” feels magnified.

The pressure to perform in front of your managers, navigating office politics, and then add being a Muslim — one that's often misunderstood by the media — made it even more challenging. Everything from avoiding the pub to how we felt about Geo politics has to be carefully tiptoed around. It’s like walking on eggshells, constantly wondering if you’re saying or doing the “right” thing.

You feel like you can’t truly be yourself, and that’s where confidence takes a hit.

But here’s the thing — it doesn’t have to stay this way. Confidence can be built, and it starts by taking a few small steps.

Here are 7 ways to feel more confident at work:

  1. Be excellent at your job
Master your craft. It’s hard to feel confident if you’re unsure of your work. Aim to be so good they can’t ignore you.

  2. Stand by your integrity
In the world of office politics, being someone who is trustworthy and honorable will take you far. Living by your Islamic values is not just good for your soul, but it sets you up for long-term success, inshaAllah.

  3. Be prepared
You know the situations that will arise — the invitation to the pub, the casual comments about the Middle East, or the puzzled looks when you do wudu. Plan ahead. Think about how you’ll address these situations with confidence and grace.

  4. Be helpful
Look for ways to contribute beyond your job description. Whether it’s offering a hand when someone’s overwhelmed or grabbing coffees for the team, being generous with your time and kindness makes you stand out.

  5. Work for Allah, not your boss
I used to think my company paid me, but the truth is, Allah has always been the provider. Shifting your mindset to working for Allah, the most Generous, makes every task — big or small — more meaningful and fulfilling.

  6. Communicate clearly
Most issues at work stem from poor communication. Speak up, be clear, and make sure you’re understood. Good communication isn’t just about avoiding problems; it’s about building strong, genuine relationships.

  7. Be yourself
This is the hardest part. The pressure to conform can be immense, but staying true to who you are is essential. Authenticity breeds confidence. Know yourself, stand firm, and don’t let the environment make you forget your values.
